Lemon Squeezy vs Gumroad: fees and selling digital products

Lemon Squeezy has the lower base fee for the direct card sales in our example. Gumroad is worth evaluating when its creator storefront and distribution fit how you sell. Compare direct sales separately from Gumroad Discover, where the commission also pays for marketplace distribution.

What would a $10,000 month cost?

These are the same fee rules used by the payment picker calculator. The example is 200 one-time orders at $50 each, paid with US domestic cards for a US business. No sales tax is collected. It excludes subscriptions, refunds, disputes, payouts, currency conversion, and optional services.

Lemon Squeezy: PayPal surcharge, stacked add-ons, and payout fees are not modeled.

Gumroad, direct sales: Discover marketplace, PayPal, and the 5% + $0.50 rate past $20,000 in monthly sales are not modeled.

Change your order price, monthly orders, and international-card share in the fee calculator. These figures compare transaction costs; they do not include the cost of managing your own taxes with a direct processor.

Are the costs being compared fairly?

The table compares a $10,000 month of direct, one-time domestic-card sales. Gumroad stays below its $20,000 paid-sales threshold. Its processing charge is included in the modeled total. Discover sales are not included.

Lemon Squeezy additions can stack for international payments, PayPal, and subscriptions. Its percentage applies to the tax-inclusive order value. If those conditions describe your customers, the base example alone will not tell you what the platform costs.

Who brings the customer?

When a buyer follows a link from your newsletter or website, compare direct-sale costs and the buying experience. Look at checkout, file delivery, refunds, and how easily you can support that customer afterward.

Gumroad Discover has a different proposition: a 30% commission including processing on marketplace sales. Evaluate it as a distribution cost. A marketplace sale you would not otherwise make is different from paying that commission on a customer you acquired yourself.

What does your product need after payment?

For an ebook, test delivery and how a buyer gets back to the file later. For software, test license management. For a membership, test renewal and cancellation. Choose using the complete customer journey.

Both platforms act as Merchant of Record for covered transactions. Check seller-country eligibility and payout terms on each. Neither removes your responsibility to deliver what you sold or maintain your business accounts.
