Lemon Squeezy: fees, digital products, and alternatives
Lemon Squeezy combines a Merchant of Record checkout with tools for selling digital products, subscriptions, and software licenses. It is worth considering when you want payment collection and product delivery in one platform.
When would you choose Lemon Squeezy?
Choose Lemon Squeezy when your approved digital product benefits from its storefront, file delivery, or license-key tooling, and the full fee schedule works for your buyers.
Look elsewhere if your product is unsupported, you need a billing workflow it does not provide, or you need your company to remain the legal seller.
What do you get beyond payment processing?
Lemon Squeezy becomes the seller for covered digital-product sales and handles their indirect tax. Its storefront and delivery tools can also save you from building the entire sales flow yourself.
For software licenses, consider how keys will be issued, validated, and revoked. For subscriptions, check what your app should do after a cancellation or failed renewal. The payment provider and your app still need to agree on what the customer can use.

What would a $10,000 month cost?
These are the same fee rules used by the payment picker calculator. The example is 200 one-time orders at $50 each, paid with US domestic cards for a US business. No sales tax is collected. It excludes subscriptions, refunds, disputes, payouts, currency conversion, and optional services.
| Provider / plan | Fee rule | Month | Effective rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lemon Squeezy | 5% + $0.50 | $600.00 | 6% |
Lemon Squeezy: PayPal surcharge, stacked add-ons, and payout fees are not modeled.
Change your order price, monthly orders, and international-card share in the fee calculator. These figures compare transaction costs; they do not include the cost of managing your own taxes with a direct processor.
Why can the fee exceed 5% + $0.50?
The base platform fee is 5% + $0.50 on the total order value, including tax. Its documented additions include 1.5% for international transactions, 1.5% for PayPal, and 0.5% for subscriptions. These can stack.
The base example is a one-time domestic-card sale without tax. It excludes those additions and payout costs. If your buyers use PayPal or most of your revenue is recurring, use the full fee documentation before comparing it with another provider.
How does it compare with a creator marketplace?
A digital-product business needs both a way to sell and a way to reach buyers. Compare Lemon Squeezy with Gumroad based on storefront and delivery needs, but keep marketplace discovery separate from payment processing.
A higher marketplace commission may buy access to a sale you would not otherwise have made. It is a different question from the fee on a customer you brought to your own checkout.
What should an existing seller check?
Stripe owns Lemon Squeezy, but Lemon Squeezy and Stripe Managed Payments should still be evaluated as distinct offerings. Do not assume that an ownership change moves your account, subscriptions, or integration automatically.
Payouts are paid on the 14th and 28th after a 13-day hold, with a $50 minimum. The fee docs list free US bank payouts and a 1% charge for non-US bank payouts. Check the terms for your own payout destination and method.
Lemon Squeezy can issue discretionary refunds within 60 days. A chargeback can deduct the refunded proceeds and a $15 fee. Preserve customer access when migrating and avoid charging renewals on both the old and new platform.
