Gumroad: selling fees, Discover, and digital product alternatives

Gumroad is a creator-commerce platform for selling downloads, courses, memberships, and other eligible digital products. It combines a storefront and delivery with Merchant of Record tax handling. Its direct-sale fees and Discover marketplace commission need separate comparisons.

When would you choose Gumroad?

Consider Gumroad when getting a digital product selling with a storefront and delivery is your priority. Price direct sales separately from customers coming through Discover.

Compare alternatives when you bring your own buyers and transaction cost is a major constraint, or when your SaaS needs billing workflows beyond your creator storefront.

What are you paying for?

Gumroad provides the page where you sell, the checkout, and digital-product delivery. That can be useful when you want to launch an ebook, course, or membership without building a commerce system.

It also acts as Merchant of Record for covered sales. Your own business still creates the product, supports it, and accounts for its income. Check the prohibited-product rules and payout eligibility before building a catalog there.

Products and country eligibility

Model: Merchant of Record.

Products: Digital downloads, ebooks, courses, tutorials, memberships, and eligible SaaS; physical and prohibited categories are excluded.

Your business: Payout method and seller availability vary by country.

Your customers: Gumroad sells internationally and applies tax based on its obligations as Merchant of Record. Eligible one-time card purchases are charged in the buyer's local currency where Gumroad supports it; everything else is processed in USD.

What would a $10,000 month cost?

These are the same fee rules used by the payment picker calculator. The example is 200 one-time orders at $50 each, paid with US domestic cards for a US business. No sales tax is collected. It excludes subscriptions, refunds, disputes, payouts, currency conversion, and optional services.

Gumroad, direct sales: Discover marketplace, PayPal, and the 5% + $0.50 rate past $20,000 in monthly sales are not modeled.

Change your order price, monthly orders, and international-card share in the fee calculator. These figures compare transaction costs; they do not include the cost of managing your own taxes with a direct processor.

What does a direct card sale cost?

For standard direct sales, the platform fee is 10% + $0.50. Gumroad documents card processing separately at 2.9% + $0.30. Together those give 12.9% + $0.80 in the standard direct-card scenario.

Gumroad also documents a lower 5% + $0.50 rate for new direct sales after paid sales reach $20,000 within a calendar month. Our example is a $10,000 month and does not reach that threshold. Do not extrapolate its effective rate to a larger month without accounting for the tier.

How is Discover different?

Discover marketplace sales have a 30% fee that includes payment processing. Keep that rate separate from a direct sale: the marketplace is also a distribution channel.

When comparing with Lemon Squeezy, decide whether you expect Gumroad to bring the customer. If you send people from your own site or newsletter, the direct-sale comparison is the relevant one. Do not assume a marketplace listing will generate sales.

What should you check before choosing?

The standard payout minimum is $100, with higher minimums in some countries. Available schedules include daily for eligible US accounts, weekly, monthly, and quarterly. Weekly, monthly, and quarterly payouts have a seven-day sales hold. PayPal payouts have a documented 2% fee.

Gumroad's current refund docs say its platform fee is returned while processing fees are retained. Connected Stripe or PayPal arrangements can differ. Check your account setup rather than assuming every Gumroad seller has the same refund or dispute process.

For memberships or software, test how your product grants access and what happens after a refund or cancellation. If you later move providers, an email export alone will not recreate active subscriptions or historical purchases.
