Polar: pricing, usage billing, and Merchant of Record tradeoffs
Polar is a Merchant of Record built around software and developer products. Its APIs, usage billing, and product benefits make it a useful option when payment events need to connect closely to what your app gives a customer.
When would you choose Polar?
Choose Polar when your product needs developer-oriented billing, usage tracking, or benefits, and your business and product meet its onboarding requirements.
Compare other options if your seller country is unsupported or your required billing workflow is missing. Check international card costs before choosing a plan by its domestic rate.
Why consider Polar for a software product?
Selling a developer product often means more than collecting a card payment. You may need to attach usage to a customer, grant a benefit after purchase, or remove access after a subscription ends. Polar puts billing and benefits in the same product.
You still need to connect those events to your application. Test how access changes during upgrades, failed payments, refunds, and cancellation. The fact that a billing platform has a feature does not establish that it fits your exact product model.
Products and country eligibility
Model: Merchant of Record.

What would a $10,000 month cost?
These are the same fee rules used by the payment picker calculator. The example is 200 one-time orders at $50 each, paid with US domestic cards for a US business. No sales tax is collected. It excludes subscriptions, refunds, disputes, payouts, currency conversion, and optional services.
| Provider / plan | Fee rule | Month | Effective rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Polar, Starter | 5% + $0.50 | $600.00 | 6% |
| Polar, Pro | $20/month, then 3.8% + $0.40 | $480.00 | 4.8% |
| Polar, Growth | $100/month, then 3.6% + $0.35 | $530.00 | 5.3% |
| Polar, Scale | $400/month, then 3.4% + $0.30 | $800.00 | 8% |

Change your order price, monthly orders, and international-card share in the fee calculator. These figures compare transaction costs; they do not include the cost of managing your own taxes with a direct processor.
Which Polar plan should you compare?
Starter has no monthly charge and takes 5% + $0.50. Paid plans trade a monthly payment for lower transaction rates. The worked table includes the monthly cost, so the lowest transaction percentage does not automatically appear cheapest.
International cards add 1.5% on every current plan. Polar also lists $15 for disputes, with payout fees passed through from Stripe. Those costs can matter more than a small difference between domestic headline rates.
Some older organizations retain Early Member pricing. Upgrading retires that pricing permanently. If that applies to you, compare your existing terms with the current plans before changing anything.
Can you receive payouts?
Polar accepts sellers through its published supported-country list and Stripe Connect Express onboarding. Buyer reach and seller eligibility are different checks: being able to charge an international buyer does not guarantee that your business can receive payouts.
New organizations created from May 12, 2026 have a default seven-day settlement delay, and withdrawals are manual. The documented Stripe payout charges include $2 per active payout month, plus 0.25% and $0.25 per payout. Conversion charges and country or currency minimums can apply.
Original payment fees are retained on refunds. Refunding a subscription order alone does not cancel the subscription, so test both actions. Your company still accounts for the payouts and pays its own business taxes.
What would make you choose another provider?
An established software business may put more weight on an existing billing workflow, migration support, or account service than on API preferences. Compare those requirements with Paddle before switching.
A simple download does not need usage billing. If your main requirement is a storefront and file delivery, compare that whole workflow with a creator-commerce platform instead of paying for features you will not use.
