Connect your tailnet

Create a practice tailnet

Create a personal tailnet, inspect its identity boundary, and confirm the current free-plan terms before adding real devices.

8 minute lesson

~~~
Signing in to Tailscale creates your first tailnet. Use an identity you control and a disposable server for this course.
The Personal plan currently permits six users in one tailnet, but plan details can change. Check the official pricing page before designing around a limit. Open the admin console and locate the Machines, Users, DNS, Access controls, and Keys pages.
Record the tailnet name and the identity provider that controls admission. Do not store login tokens or screenshots containing secrets in the project notes.
After signing in on two disposable devices, inspect their state:
tailscale status
tailscale ip -4
tailscale netcheck
Record each device name and Tailscale address. Confirm which identity enrolled it. Remove any old test device you no longer control. A clean inventory makes later policy tests understandable because every node has one known owner and purpose.
