Use the three persistent parts of the macOS interface and understand why an application can stay open without a visible window.

The Desktop is a folder and a workspace. The Dock launches apps and shows running ones. The menu bar contains the active application menu and system controls.
The menu bar changes when you switch apps. Look there when you cannot find a command inside a window.
Closing the last window does not always quit a Mac app. Use Command-Q when you want to stop the application itself.
